Birch is a symbol of north woods and northern peoples. For centuries, its versatile bark has been used to craft beautiful, durable, functional objects — canoes and containers, and woven into a variety of shapes and objects — baskets, and even shoes. These workshops offer a chance to sample the possibilities of birch bark weaving.

 

Learn to weave a traditional, diagonally plaited, double walled, Finnish/Scandinavian birch bark basket using traditional weaving techniques. In keeping with the Finnish/Scandinavian weaving tradition, you will use the inner layer of the outer bark to weave your basket. Enjoy your basket plain or add traditional embellishments, according to interest and time. Moderate hand strength required. Prior use of tools helpful, but not required.

 

Please bring the following supplies:

  • A pair of scissors
  • A ruler
  • Fiskars fingertip craft knife
  • Smooth jaw micro alligator clips, if you have them. If you don't have them, it's not necessary to buy them. Instructor will provide clips.
