Come learn how to warp and weave on the Drawloom in this three day workshop.

Draw loom equipment can be added to a traditional style floor loom. You will learn what makes a drawloom and the concepts which will help you to weave on a drawloom.

Friday

The warping process is similar to warping an  ordinary loom. We will start with beaming the warp and threading the heddles. While taking turns threading, you will be learning how patterns are designed. With woven drawdown samples, Joanne will discuss the kinds of things that can be woven on a drawloom. You will learn to make your own designs.

Saturday

After sleying the reed, we will be making the drawcords. Drawcords and handles are made at this time before the warp is in the middle of the loom, since it is helpful if you can stand inside the loom to make the drawcords.

Then the reed is put into the beater and we tie-on and tension the warp. The pattern shafts are then put into place. These shafts create the images when you are weaving.

Sunday

Our discussions will include reading drawloom drafts and understanding how the drawloom makes sheds. To complete the drawloom tie-up, the heights of the ground shafts, pattern shafts and lamms are measured and adjusted.

  • Treadles are tied up.
  • The back beam height determined.
  • Then the sheds are checked and we can weave.

During the workshop students will warp the loom with 16/2 cotton. After the workshop, students will sign-up and return to weave a dishtowel or wall hanging of their own design on the drawloom.

During the workshop, we will discuss planning your project, choosing patterns and colors, and choosing shuttles and winding quills.

Joanne’s book, Drawloom Weaving, will be available for you to use and/or purchase.
