This is a new course
This is a 3-session “on-loom” workshop where we will be learning about suitable yarns for warp and weft in tapestry weaving, as well as techniques.
Session 1
Participants will warp a Glimakra Freja tapestry loom, 15” by 17” with three different sized cotton seine twine warps, side by side. You will learn about putting in “the floor” and other warping information.
Weaving vertically, we will discuss weft considerations for each warp, including weft tension, bubbling, knots, bobbins vs. butterflies, the basics for plying, and what makes a good weft yarn for tapestry.
Session 2
The class will continue to weave the three warps vertically. We will be covering:
- “Hitching on and off”
- Meet and Separate
- Splicing
- Slits
- Winding a bobbin
- Finishing a tapestry
- Tapestry design and cartoon preparation
Session 3
Participants will create a simple design and a cartoon. They will warp their looms with the appropriate sized seine twine. We will have more discussion on the design process, finishing styles, and framed vs unframed, etc.

I have been involved with textiles for many years in a business as well as a creative capacity. Technical development is important to me. I have taken numerous workshops and classes, and was employed in the yarn development divisions for two major textile manufacturers. I have also been a contract weaver and in the eighties I maintained a studio at the Brush Gallery in downtown Lowell, MA. I currently weave in my home studio and maintain space in the Arts League of Lowell Gallery, Lowell, MA where I display my handwoven clothing, rugs, afghans and art pieces.
Since the late 80’s I have woven and taught Tapestry weaving, a powerful art form dating back many centuries. Weaving is very labor intensive and offers me the opportunity to slow down and be deliberate in this accelerated paced world.
